What Causes Sever’s Disease?

The ailment known as Sever’s disease affects the heels in children and teenagers. It typically occurs when the growth plate in the heel has been injured, often due to physical activity. It generally happens at a time when rapid growth is experienced, and will commonly cease by age 15. Research has shown that the occurrence of Sever’s disease may be increased if certain conditions are apparent. These may include a flat or elevated arch, obesity which may put additional weight on the growth plate, or a condition referred to as short leg syndrome. If you notice your child is limping or is experiencing heel pain, they may have Sever’s disease. After a proper diagnosis is performed, treatment can generally begin by ceasing the activity that caused this condition. Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

When proper foot stretches are performed, the body may become stronger, and may possibly alleviate certain aches and pains that may be present. An effective stretch that may strengthen the plantar fascia would be to interlace your fingers between your toes, and gently pull while rolling your ankle in small circles. Additionally, a stretch that simulates a massage involves using a tennis ball. When the foot is placed on top of the ball and gently rolled, the ligaments and tendons are stretched, encouraging the muscles of the foot to loosen. A popular foot stretch is known as flexing the foot. While sitting down, hold your foot in your hands and gently pull into an arch. The benefits of this effective stretch include improved strength in the toes in addition to possibly preventing any foot spasms from occurring. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.

How to Treat Toenail Fungus

Onychomycosis, more commonly known as Toenail fungus, affects approximately half of all Americans by the age of 70. This fungal infection occurs when microscopic fungi gains entry through a small trauma in the nail, and the growth process arises due to moisture from the patient’s socks and shoes. Common symptoms of toenail fungus include swelling, crumbling, thickening, and yellowing of the nail. In certain cases, some may even experience a complete loss of the nail itself. Toenail fungus can be caused by walking around in damp areas such as gym locker rooms, shower stalls, or swimming pools. The condition can easily spread from one person to another or even to other parts of the body. Those with diabetes should be especially careful when it comes to toenail fungus, because they are at an increased risk of contracting it. This may be due to the fact that diabetics have a compromised immune system.
