LA Galaxy Shorthanded for Start of Season

The Los Angeles Galaxy is going to be starting the Major League Soccer season in rough shape.  Forward Gyasi Zardes and right back Robbie Rogers are still nursing injuries and their season starts on March 4th.  Zardes broke a bone in his foot last August and then sustained another injury during training camp in the run up to this season.  Rogers has been battling ankle injuries for the last couple of years, with the most recent one last summer.  He underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery and is still recovering from the procedure.  It looks like The Galaxy and their fans are going to be missing these two important players.

Flat Feet in Children

Flat foot is a condition that commonly affects young children, caused by a collapse in the medial longitudinal arch of the foot and sagging of the heel valgus. In most cases, the condition resolves itself as the child grows older; the arch typically forms between the third and fifth years of life. Diagnosis of the condition involves the careful examination of the child’s foot, ankle, and joints. The child may be asked to dangle their feet in the air or stand on their tiptoes. Treatment often revolves around monitoring the condition for possible progression, as the condition can correct itself as previously mentioned.

What are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

If you are experiencing moderate to severe pain in your heel or foot, you may have Plantar Fasciitis.  Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the heel of the foot, causing in some cases, very extreme pain. There are many causes for this, one being overstretching of the plantar fascia ligament, which runs from the heel to the ball of the foot.  This ligament supports the arch and can be affected by both the feet below it, and the muscles above.  If the calf muscles are too tight, this can pull on the ligament and cause inflammation.  A similar thing happens if you have flat feet.  The foot stretches the ligament from below.  Other activities that can cause Plantar Fasciitis are standing for long periods of time, running while planting your heel instead of your toe, and constant stress on the plantar fascia ligament.  Make sure to stretch your calves, take care that your footwear is not worn out, and seek podiatric treatment if your condition is painful.
